Dr. R. Malatesha Joshi is the University Professor of Literacy Education and Educational Psychology at Texas A & M University and is the editor of Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal, a high-impact journal. He is a Fellow of American Educational Research Association and received the 2020 Orton Award – IDA’s highest honor and last year received the award from the Association for Reading and Writing in Asia (ARWA) for the ‘extraordinary contribution to understanding literacy around the world’. He is currently serving on the Literacy Research Panel of the International Literacy Association and as a language expert, UNESCO Institute of Statistics, Global Proficiency Framework (GPF).

Spelling Development the Science Behind It

Spelling is a window on what a person knows about words and learning about words and about the language will improve spelling as well as reading and writing skills. In this presentation, we demonstrate the regularity of English spelling based upon the phonological, orthographic, and morphological principles and how spelling can be taught in an explicit, systematic, and direct manner. I will also review some of our research on spelling acquisition in different dialects and languages.
